Christian Estrosi denies arrest rumours

Since the weekend, rumours have been circling that the president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and the former mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, has been arrested by police and taken into custody. The right-wing politician has now come out fighting against what he has called ‘falsehoods’ and ‘malicious lies’ to announce he will take further action to investigate who is at the root of the rumours. Read more

A8 disruptions this week

From 24th to 27th October, Vinci Autoroute will be carrying out major works at the exits for Antibes, Villeneuve-Loubet and Mandelieu-la-Napoule on the A8 motorway. The construction and renovation works will all take place between the hours of 9pm and 5am. Read more

86 white roses against a deep blue sky

Police officers sighed as they looked at the sky on the morning of 15th October. After the severe storm of the day before, a day on which the 86 victims of the assassination of 14th July were to be commemorated, the sun shone again from the deep blue sky. Many thousands turned out last Saturday including hundreds of those injured in the tragic event, French President François Hollande, Prince Albert II of Monaco and almost all of France’s leading politicians - only Manuel Valls was missing.Read more

Baby sea turtles born in the Var

The turtle who laid her eggs on the sandy beaches of Saint-Aygulf in Fréjus earlier this year has this week become a mother following the birth of two rare sea turtle hatchlings. Read more

TER trains heavily disrupted by strikes

Due to a regional strike by SNCF workers, the train network in the south of France is heavily disrupted this Monday. Just 25% of trains on the Nice - Marseille line are running and only two in five trains on the shorter Les Arcs - Grasse - Cannes - Nice - Ventimiglia is in operation. Read more

New motorcycle regulations

In an effort to reduce the severity of injuries caused by motorcycling and scooter accidents, and to improve general road safety, all two-wheeled road users must wear protective gloves from 20th November. Those not abiding by the new EU regulations will be given a fine and receive infractions on their driving licence. Read more

Price of rolling tobacco to rise

From the start of next year, the French government is reportedly planning to increase the tax on loose tobacco. In 2015, sales for ‘rollies’ experienced 6.3% growth, compared to just 1% for cigarettes. It is currently around 30% cheaper to smoke rolling tobacco than it is to purchase ready-rolled cigarettes, leading to fears that it is becoming a particularly popular product with young people.  Read more

Nice voted 4th best beach city in the world

The capital of the French Riviera, the city of Nice, has been voted the fourth best beach city in the world by the National Geographic. Commending its ‘uninterrupted’ coastline, the sparkling Baie des Anges and, of course, the famous Promenade des Anglais, the publication placed Nice at the top of the list – only beaten by Barcelona (first place), Cape Town and Honolulu.Read more


A guest at the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez has accidentally smashed his McLaren MP4-12 C Spider into the glass frontage of the famous hotel, causing thousands of euros worth of damage to the building and his 233,000 euros car. The client hasn’t been named, but hotel manager Alessandro Cresta didn’t seem too upset at the news, telling the press, “It isn’t the first time this has happened! Twenty years ago a car drove right into reception!” Read more
