It makes quite the picture: Jean Cocteau and Coco Chanel enjoying a typically English afternoon tea on the terraces of the Grand Hôtel du Cap Ferrat. Now chef Gaëtan Fiard is reviving a tradition begun by the artistic pair in the 1950s with a delicious selection of desserts and pastries featuring products of the region.
The bar à choux – a range of light profiterole type pastry – is the main event with flavours such as Menton lemon, truffles sourced in the forests of France and Italy, soft and creamy goats cheese, chocolate and raspberries. English classics such as scones and mini sandwiches have their place alongside tourte aux blettes (a savoury tart), which itself is a Niçois speciality.
Teas from Betjeman and Barton complete the experience, which is being hosted by the five star resort every Thursday through to Sunday until 25th November from 2pm to 5.30pm. The price is 35€ per person.
