Weather warnings for the mountains of the Alpes-Maritimes have risen to a yellow avalanche alert today, with the prefecture advising caution throughout the weekend. Skiers in the Mercantour mountain range and particularly the Isola-Tende area are being urged to stick to the pistes after the warnings were upgraded from a Level 3 to a Level 4 in the last 24 hours.
Following large dumps of snow across the region last night (Thursday to Friday), which saw up to 50cm of fresh powder fall in some places, Météo France has issued a yellow avalanche alert in the Alpes-Maritimes. The fears are that the prevailing southerly wind may be aggravating the new snow.
The avalanche alert will remain in place until at least 3pm on Saturday, but may be extended as further snowfall is also forecast. Ski resorts are being encouraged to remain on high alert over the next few days.
