Clean Monaco’s Beaches

Traditionally, cone-shaped ashtrays are distributed every day until the end of the summer period in September. Clean, cigarette butt-free beaches as far as the eye can see: that’s the dream that Monaco wants to turn in to a reality through the Clean Monaco’s Beaches initiative.

Due to the combined efforts and commitment of the Mayor of Monaco, the director of the Monegasque tourism department and the Monegasque sanitation society, the ‘Clean Monaco’s Beaches’ initiative is back again for its eight year. Traditionally, cone-shaped ashtrays are distributed every day until the end of the summer period in September. It is hoped that the increased availability of ashtrays leads to a decrease in the amount of rubbish and butts left on the beaches.

Since Monday 17th July, distribution points have been installed at three entrances to Larvotto beach in Monaco. The ashtrays are freely available to everyone and they can even be kept and re-used.

This year, specifically designed pocket ashtrays have been created for the ‘clean-up’ and they will be distributed at various points around Monaco: Solarium Beach, at the entrance to the Avant Port, and at the tourist information points around Monaco.

The ‘Clean Monaco’s Beaches’ movement hopes to raise smokers’ awareness of cleanliness and the overall quality of the principality’s beaches. It’s estimated that a total of 6,400 conical ashtrays and 5,000 portable ashtrays will be distributed before the end of summer.
