Don’t go in the water!

Plage de la Gravette in Antibes unfortunately living up to its nickname: The Toilet Bowl. Copyright Heather CowperSwimming in Antibes is banned until Friday morning. While some may be tempted by a refreshing dip in the sea given the warmer than usual temperatures, swimming should be avoided at all costs this week as extension works are carried out at the water treatment plant near Plage Salis.

Pumping stations from Biot to Juan-les-Pins have been temporarily closed to facilitate the upgrades in Antibes and the local council has warned that this will lead to some waste seeping into the sea.

A perimeter has supposedly been set up to reduce the risks of contamination, but Riviera Insider culture correspondent Sarah Hyde still had a nasty shock when she popped down to the Plage de la Gravette beach in Antibes for her usual swim. Luckily she stopped before taking a dip and used a choice four letter word to describe what she saw in the water: “Loads of ****!”

We’ll give you one guess...
