Actor-activist Leonardo DiCaprio is to be honoured by Prince Albert II for his work and efforts to preserve the planet at the inaugural Monte-Carlo Gala for the Global Ocean Gala. Taking place on Thursday 28th September on the terraces of the principality’s famous opera house, the event is the result of a collaboration between Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and Global Funding.
“We all share a common responsibility to keep our ocean healthy, for the current and next generations, for the future of our planet,” a representative of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation tells Riviera Insider, “this is the spirit of the Monte-Carlo Gala for the Ocean. Representing more than 70% of the planet’s surface and 97% of the biosphere, the global ocean plays a key role in climate regulation, producing 50% of the oxygen we breathe and absorbing 25% of the carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere.”
Since its inception in 2006, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has positioned the ocean among its top priorities. The Foundation’s activities include efforts to better understand the environmental dangers to which our ocean is exposed, fight against plastic pollution, strengthen and develop marine protected areas, conserve endangered species, and promote innovative solutions for a sustainable ocean.
The event will be presided over by Prince Albert and hosted by Global Fundraising chairman Milutin Gatsby. During the course of the evening, Leonardo DiCaprio will be given a special award for his international efforts to promote a healthier future for the planet. Simon de Pury will also conduct a live auction, which will be filled with once-in-a-lifetime experiences, collectibles and memorabilia, and selection of fine art from some of the world’s most important artists.
It is expected to be a star-studded affair with the likes of Uma Thurman, Goldie Hawn, Andy Garcia, Kevin Spacey, Eva Longoria, Madonna, Joe Pesci, Martin Scorsese, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tobey Maguire, Enric Sala and Terry Tamminen among the event chairs.
Proceeds from the gala will go towards the prince’s foundation and its own initiatives in favour of a sustainable global ocean.
