The Jan/Feb/Mar 2021 issue is now out!

Riviera Insider Magazine Jan 2021 Despite our reduced events and unsure reopening/curfew/re-confinement, we’ve still managed to fill our pages with interesting stories and things to do. And with our distribution points still closed, we’ve done another double issue, so if you understand German, it’s a 2-for-1 magazine! Here's an overview of this issue from the editor.

The true symbol of winter on the Côte d’Azur is undoubtedly the mimosa. Mid-way through January, the hills flourish with fluffy yellow flowers, to the delight of all. Read about the history of how this cheerful tree came to the South of France (via Golfe-Juan) and the trails to enjoy them to the fullest. The annual Mimosa Festival in Mandelieu is cancelled this year, but they’ve opened a new Mimosa park, within the stunning ‘Mimosa forest’.

Even though the ski slopes are still closed, the snow-covered mountains aren’t off-limits! We’ve got a special winter getaway feature for all the other snow activities you can do on your own or as a family, from snow-shoeing the ‘Planetary Path’ to dog-sledging through the forest. Or my personal favourite, enjoying the snow from the inside at a luxurious alpine spa. :)

Riviera Insider Magazine Jan 2021 School special

Our first issue is always our school special, as parents prepare for the upcoming school year. We have a 16-page special with the top international bilingual schools, the latest reforms to the BAC, the new ‘Parcoursup’ French university application system and the changes that EU students face in attending UK universities post-Brexit. We also look at how Covid and online teaching will affect the future of education in a more connected, more specialised world. Will a 4-year degree become obsolete? Don’t miss my interview with the President of Université Côte d’Azur on the goal to make it the ‘university of the new millennium’ and the addition of more English-language Masters programmes.

In our Lifestyle section, our local nutritionist teaches us the difference between ‘pre’ and ‘pro’ biotics and why they’re both equally important to our digestive health and immune system.

The world lost several legends at the end of 2020, including Sean Connery, who was married nearly 45 years to an artist from the Côte d’Azur and spent many years in their stunning villa in Nice. Rolf Liffers looks back on the original Bond and his time in the South of France.

In a story that I was personally dedicated to researching, I sat down with Chris Maughan, local Mougins resident, founder and president of a large, successful booking agency to discuss rental fraud. At the 2019 Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity, I met a marketing executive from Manhattan who had paid $7,000 for one week in a ‘beautiful apartment with sea views’ in Cannes. She arrived to find a tiny "dump" on the third floor with no lift. Paid in full before arrival, her money was a total loss.

Rental fraud is a serious problem around the world, especially with the rise of third-party booking sites for private lodging (hint: they don’t actually verify listings). And Cannes is a magnet for fraudsters due to the international arrivals for festivals, trade shows and holiday seekers. After coming to the rescue of yet another family scammed out of thousands, Chris Maughan decided to do something about it. Read the story that will send chills down your spine, but give hope not only to you on your holiday, but also provide property owners with a guaranteed verification system and tips for how to handle the new 2021 market.

For golf fans, our expert takes you into Provence for a review of the gorgeous Golf de Servanes, immersed amongst thousands of olive trees.

This issue is a little light on Art with the continued uncertainty, but we’ve got the largest contemporary art fair coming to Nice for the first time! Nice Art Expo was imagined and organised by a very young, local artist who longtime readers of "Riviera Insider" will be familiar with: Thomas Lemaire, ‘Nice’s rising star,’ is bringing the world’s art to us at a time when artists haven’t been able to exhibit or sell their work for a long time.

There are several local authors with new books out, so don’t miss that page, and we’ve also got the goods on the latest record-breaking sale at Artcurial

Plus lots more...
