ART & CULTURE
This has been a bleak year for most, but especially for the event and hospitality industry, something the city of Cannes relies so heavily upon. Among the first cancellations of this crisis was the hallowed Festival de Cannes, the world-famous Film festival that swells the small city with tens of thousands of visitors, many of them the top stars of the world. Now, a new "Special Cannes 2020" is coming to the Croisette!
In a special decision for a 'special' year, the previously cancelled Festival de Cannes will, at last, roll out the red carpet in 2020. From 27 to 29 October, part of the Official Selection will be screened, in full festival attire, at the Palais des Festivals. With the concerted effort of the Cannes City Council, the organisers of the Festival de Cannes and the Palais, a 'mini' festival will be had!
This extraordinary "Special Cannes 2020" edition offers the general public the opportunity to take a seat in the Louis Lumière Auditorium of the Palais des Festivals and Congresses, where four previews of films from the Official Selection 2020 will be screened, as well as the short films selected in competition and the school films of the Cinéfondation. A Jury, whose composition will be announced shortly, will award the Palme d'Or for short films and the Cinéfondation Prizes.
The event will open with Emmanuel Courcol's "Un triomphe" with Kad Merad, in the presence of the film crew and with the participation of Memento Films, and will end with the premiere of the film "Les Deux Alfred" by Bruno Podalydès, in the presence of the director and lead actress Sandrine Kiberlain, and with the participation of UGC Distribution. "Asa Ga Kuru" (True Mothers) by Japanese director, Naomi Kawase, a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the debut film by the Georgian revelation Dea Kulumbegashvili, "Beginning" (Wild Bunch International), which has just won the Concha de oro for best film, as well as the prizes for best director, best screenplay and best actress at the San Sebastián Film Festival, will also be screened.
Pierre Lescure, President of the Cannes Film Festival stated: "We are as happy about the prospect of the Festival being hosted by the Cannes City Council in October as we were sad not to have been present at its side in May. Thanks to this collaboration, films from the Official Selection will be shown on the Croisette. This is our way of being in Cannes, alongside its population and all its professionals with whom we work hand in hand every year".
Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival: "Four films from the Official Selection, the short film competition, the film school competition, dinners and meetings... It is a summary of the happiness of being in Cannes that we will all experience together in October! The films of the Official Selection are currently meeting the spectators in France, in Europe and in the world. It's a beautiful symbol to see them making a stopover in Cannes before we turn our attention to the 2021 edition."
David Lisnard, Mayor of Cannes: "We wanted the presence of the Cannes Film Festival in 2020 to mark our determination to support the events industry, which provides a living for hundreds of families, and for the cultural influence of our city. This festival, therefore, had to set its bags down in Cannes for an extraordinary edition with all the codes respected: quality screenings in front of an attentive audience in evening dress on the most famous red carpet.
Cannes 2020 at the Palais des Festivals and Congresses is a sanitary, cultural and economic demonstration of our capacity to host the most famous and radiant events: the Cannes Festival."
