Coronavirus antibody tests now available in Antibes and Cannes

Since 20 April, the two Maisons Médicales in Antibes-Juan-les-Pins and Cannes-La Bocca have been offering Covid-19 antibody tests to the public. Without an appointment, anyone can come by and have their blood drawn. 48 hours later, the test will determine whether the person was infected with the coronavirus or not.

The medical facilities, which were opened only two years ago in Juan-les-Pins and this past February in Cannes-La Bocca, offer medical assistance in "minor emergencies" under normal circumstances. However, since the confinement began, the number of patients has fallen rapidly. At the same time, doctors have felt a strong need among the population to obtain clarity about whether one has already been infected with the virus.

So the two Maisons Médicales, in collaboration with a laboratory in the west of the département, quickly set up 'dépistage sérologique' stations, where blood is drawn to test for antibodies to Covid-19. If the antibodies are found, it means that the body has been exposed to the virus and the body created cells to fight it. This is not the same type of test used to test for the active virus like you get at drive-up stations in Cannes in Nice.

The tests have been taking place since Monday 20 April and the clinics are keeping a strict separation between those who want to be tested and those who come for other medical issues.

How does the test work?

Those who want to be tested for Covid-19 can go to one of the two centres without an appointment. You will need to bring your Carte Vitale and mutuelle. After registering, a nurse draws blood like a typical blood test and after the patient receives a 15-minute doctor's consultation. The result is available 48 hours later, with a cost of 30 Euros, to be paid at the laboratory.

In addition to the service for the people, the test is also used to get an overview of the immunisation rate of the population. Comparable test centres are expected to open in the coming days and weeks in other locations across the Côte d'Azur.
