ART & CULTURE
The 37th edition of Europe’s heritage celebrations takes place in mid-September across Europe. In France, the Journées du Patrimoine fall on the 19th and 20th. These days most cultural centres, including museums and heritage sites will be open to the public and free of charge. So make a list of places you've been meaning to visit!
This initiative, which also gives access to rarely opened historical sites, was launched by the Council of Europe in 1985. However, it only officially became a co-organised event with the European Union in 1999. Since then, there are 50 signatory countries to the European Cultural Convention that participate throughout these two days every year. Locals and tourists are encouraged to take advantage of this event to attend free visits and learn about Europe’s cultural heritage.
The objective behind these events is to remind residents and tourists about the cultural richness and diversity there is here. It’s the opportunity to learn about Europe’s history and find out more about the many various cultures that have always existed. The interest in this history not only informs everyone about the necessity to protect the European heritage, but it also counters racism and xenophobia.
From 19 - 20 September, most Châteaux, Villas, museums, galleries and churches will be free! This includes MAMAC, the Chagall and Matisse museums in Nice, the Fernand Léger Museum in Biot, Fort Carré in Antibes, all museums and heritage sites in Cannes, and so much more. For a complete list of sites in the Alpes-Maritime, click here.
On 27 September, Monaco opens the doors to their government offices, gardens, and some of the museums. Guided tours can be arranged, see the Visit Monaco website for details.
